« Little is known about the African women who came to Europe from the 1870s onwards, nor do we dare to imagine them as wealthy, elegantly dressed individuals with refined tastes and fluent in several languages. The Krio Fernandino represented a multisited, multilocal, transnational, transcontinental and Afropolitan community that lived between Africa and Europe from the late 19th century onwards. This book explains how the Krio Fernandino, and particularly their women, transcended the barriers of race and gender in colonial Africa and in Spain. Cet ouvrage retrace l’histoire méconnue des femmes Krio Fernandino, une communauté afropolitaine vivant entre l’Afrique et l’Europe dès la fin du XIXe siècle. Bien loin de stéréotypes péjoratifs qui peuvent être associés aux femmes noires de l’époque, elles sont décrites comme élégantes, polyglottes et cultivées, et auraient franchi les frontières raciales et de genre dans l’Afrique coloniale et en Espagne. À travers une enquête riche et trans-nationale, l’anthropologue révèle un récit puissant d’émancipation féminine et un héritage euro-africain à valoriser.
